The application and mechanism of zinc in crop health and virus disease control

2026-04-16

Abstract: Zinc is an essential trace element for crops and can alleviate plant viral diseases by activating immunity, inhibiting viral replication, stabilising cell structures, and regulating metabolism. GROWMAX-Zn chelated zinc fertiliser launched by City Max Group has strong stability, high absorption efficiency, flexible application, and good compatibility. It can efficiently supplement zinc, correct zinc deficiency symptoms, support healthy crop growth, and prevent viral diseases, contributing to quality improvement and yield enhancement.

ⅠThe mechanism of zinc in alleviating plant viral diseases

Zinc, as an essential trace element for plants, plays a "dual role" in alleviating viral diseases—it is both an "activator" of the plant immune system and an "interferer" of viral replication. Zinc does not kill viruses directly, but it reduces the overall harm of viral diseases through four pathways: activating immunity, inhibiting replication, protecting cells, and reducing transmission.

1. Activate the antioxidant system and reduce oxidative damage

Zinc is a core cofactor of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD and POD, which can quickly eliminate excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by viral infections, protect cell membranes, proteins, and DNA, and alleviate symptoms such as yellowing, necrosis, and wilting.

2. Stabilise cell structure and build a physical barrier

Enhance the toughness of cell walls and stabilise cell membrane integrity, reducing viral entry points; promote vascular bundle development, lowering the likelihood of infection at feeding sites by aphids, whiteflies and other vectors.

3. Inhibit virus replication and spread

Interferes with viral nucleic acid synthesis and protein assembly, reducing the rate of viral proliferation; induces the synthesis of phytoalexins and pathogenesis-related proteins (PR), activates salicylic acid (SA)-mediated systemic resistance, and restricts viral movement within the organism.

4. Regulate metabolism and hormone balance

Correct growth disorders caused by viruses, alleviate typical viral symptoms such as small leaves, clustering, and dwarfism; improve photosynthetic efficiency and nutrient transport, enhancing the overall disease resistance and recovery ability of the plant.

Ⅱ EDTA -Zn: Highly Effective Zinc Supplementation Solution

Traditional zinc fertilisers require soil conversion, are easily fixed and antagonised, and are less effective in alkaline/saline-alkaline soils; EDTA-Zn is an actively delivered chelated zinc that can be readily absorbed by crops and is not limited by soil conditions.

Five Core Advantages:

✓ High stability: Maintains activity within a pH range of 4-10, isolates interference from phosphate and carbonate, suitable for alkaline/limestone soils;

High absorption efficiency: Absorption rate is 2-3 times that of inorganic zinc, avoids antagonism from calcium, magnesium, iron and other elements, participates directly in metabolism without conversion;

Flexible application: Supports foliar spraying, drip irrigation, fertigation, basal application, seed coating, compatible with conventional water-soluble fertilisers and soil conditioners;

High safety: Does not burn roots, leaves, or flowers, can be used safely during sensitive periods, leaves no residue and does not damage soil;

✓ Synergistic enhancement: When combined with biostimulants and trace elements, it improves overall fertiliser efficiency and crop resistance.

GROWMAX-Zn chelated zinc fertiliser, refined by City Max Group using advanced EDTA chelation technology, can effectively protect zinc ions from being fixed in the soil, ensuring efficient absorption and utilisation by crops. This product can effectively prevent and correct physiological disorders in crops caused by zinc deficiency, such as small leaf disease, leaf deformities, and stunted seedlings, ensuring robust plant growth. GROWMAX-Zn exhibits excellent soil stability and good mobility, with an absorption and utilisation rate far exceeding conventional inorganic zinc salts, approximately 3-5 times that of zinc sulphate, significantly reducing the total fertiliser usage. It is highly compatible with most chemical fertilisers and pesticides (including phosphate fertilisers), without antagonism or precipitation, suitable for safe and efficient integrated crop management programmes.
